The Walled Space at Knepp Castle Estate as featured in Gardener’s Notes - Compass #81 reviewed by Mary Hackett RHSI.
“Every year Jimi Blake of Hunting Brook Gardens leads a few garden tours overseas. They’re fun, sociable and thought-provoking. In September 2024, Jimi took us to see the walled garden at Knepp Castle in Surrey. Designed by Tom Stuart-Smith for out-on-the-edge conservationists and rewilders Charles Burrell and Isabella Tree, Knepp was the thoughtful working out of so many concepts I have seen in development in the last decade. But was it a garden? I’m still not sure. My piece for Compass’ Autumn issue was an attempt to identify the complexity and contradictions I saw at Knepp. In July, again in the company of Jimi B., I’ll be heading for Kent. Andrew Salter’s immersive garden-in-a field and John Little’s low maintenance biodiverse space are both on the itinerary. I can’t wait!”
Mary will continue her epic exploration of gardens far and wide in our Compass #82 (Spring/Summer) issue when she be writing about Garnish Island on the Beara Peninsula
