Gate Lodge, Co Kildare
Griffin Landscape Architecture has designed a classically arranged garden, re-establishing the originally intended sense of formality, while also imprinting our own patterns and style. Given the vast nature of the property, it was important to create several path systems that intertwine, all with a particular purpose, into the design. Located on the grounds of an historic estate, the existing mature planting has been integrated into the proposals and the surrounding landscape has informed much of the tree planting.
"Pathways to Home" Bord Bia Bloom Show Garden
Griffin Landscape Architecture designed the Peter McVerry Trust’s garden to represent the journey from homelessness and sleeping rough to living in a safe and secure home. Reflective of the physical and emotional journey undertaken by their clients, the garden provides a respite from the pressures of homelessness. A series of pathways of varying heights transects the garden; suggesting a staggered journey punctuated by opportunities to seek support. A constrained use of colour defines the textured planting at different levels, complimented by the stillness of the timber benches. The garden, with its innovative use of materials and planting, prompts reflection on the ongoing innovative work of Peter McVerry Trust in providing homes, embedded in a green environment, and wraparound services as part of the ‘Housing First’ model. The project received a Gold Medal and the Peoples Choice Award at Bord Bia Bloom 2022.
Redevelopment of Howth Castle and Estate
As part of a wider master plan strategy for the Howth Demesne, Griffin Landscape Architecture wasproudly commissioned to undertake the restoration and redevelopment of Howth Castle and surrounds. Howth Castle which is located within an Architecture Conservation Area, dates back to the 11th Century and has undergone a number of renovations over the past 900 years. The central design concept within the boundaries of the historic Castle, is to render the historic fabric visible, with the aim to make the remnants and former existence of the gardens legible again. In doing so, a number of historic paths identified on historic maps are to be re-introduced, improving the overall circulation and visitor experience. Distant views, mature woodlands and walled gardens all form part of the castle experience and are to be protected and restored sensitively. A new Museum Plaza will replace the existing entrance space to the Transport Museum. This new plaza is intended to be a flexible open space which can cater for outdoor events, as well as cater for the high numbers of visitors expected to visit the Museum and Castle.
