Biography

I was born and lived my entire life in Ukraine until recent events required a move. I graduated from the Faculty of Biology at Kharkiv National University and then spent seventeen years as a landscape designer and owner of a landscaping company.

Historically, Ukraine did not offer formal education in landscape design. However, a robust system of seminars, workshops, and short courses—led by respected Ukrainian and international designers—provided essential training. Annual conferences ensured that the Ukrainian design community remained conversant with European landscape trends.

In Kharkiv, I contributed to the support and development of local designers. My focus extended beyond mere aesthetic considerations, embracing sustainability and ecological mindfulness. In recent years, I have shared my expertise in hardscaping, the creation of sustainable gardens, and educating others about rain garden technology and stormwater management.

Following the outbreak of war in Ukraine, I relocated to Ireland, finding a new home in Cork where I continue my work with a local landscaping company. In 2024, I established my own business, focusing on ecological and sustainable landscape practices.

Ireland, with its natural beauty and favourable climate, inspires me to design gardens that minimise artificial elements, advocating a philosophy of ecological harmony.

Projects

'Everybody’s Garden'

Our show garden was created in 2021 at the Kiev Botanical Garden. We presented a small section of an imaginary city park, designed as an alley with shaded seating areas tailored for individuals with limited mobility.

At the centre of the garden, the concept ‘the flesh is weak, but the spirit is strong’ was embodied by a sculpture of a flying man.

We believe that urban planting must be sustainable, even in the face of Ukraine’s robust continental climate. By employing a ‘mixed planting’ technique, we developed a drought-resistant perennial planting scheme which significantly reduced the required maintenance time.

'Oak Forest Garden'

Welcome to Eastern Ukraine, where shade is a coveted blessing. In a region where the summer heat can be relentless and water is a precious resource, we strive to retain as many existing trees and undergrowth as possible when building a house in the forest. We then introduce shade-tolerant trees, shrubs, and perennials, seamlessly integrating them into the surroundings. We minimise lawns that require excessive watering during summer droughts. Perennial shade-tolerant ground covers prove much more sustainable beneath the canopy of oaks. Ornamental grasses add texture and movement to the otherwise dull autumn days.

'Conifer Garden'

Our winters are harsh, with snow cover often reaching 50 cm and more. That’s why conifers are vital elements in any Ukrainian garden. Dwarf Pinus and Picea varieties easily withstand the weight of the snow.

This garden was renovated in 2018. Our task was to organise chaotic planting and create a comfortable space for outdoor family living. We positioned a pool, a gazebo, and a sports ground amidst the existing pine trees. We removed part of the existing lawn and replaced it with gravelled and mulched areas. Many plants were replanted to form large decorative groups, separated from the lawn.
